Introduction of Manganese

Manganese is widely present in various ores, but manganese-containing ores with industrial development value must have a manganese content of at least 6% and are collectively referred to as "a certain manganese ores." There are about 150 kinds of manganese-containing minerals known in nature, which belong to oxides, carbonates, silicates, sulfides, borates, tungstates, phosphates, etc., There are not many minerals with high manganese content, which can be divided into the following types.

1. Pyrolusite: The main body is manganese dioxide, tetragonal crystal system, the crystals are thin columnar or needle-shaped, usually in the form of massive and powdery aggregates. Pyrolusite is a very common mineral in manganese ore and an important mineral raw material for manganese smelting.

2. Pyromanganese: It is the oxide of barium and manganese. The color of pyrmanganese is from dark gray to black, the surface is smooth, semi-metallic luster, grape or stalactite-like mass. It belongs to the monoclinic system, the crystal is relatively rare, the hardness is 4-6, and the specific gravity is 4.4-4.7.

3. Bimanganese ore: Bimanganese ore is found not only in some hydrothermal deposits of internal generation, but also in sedimentary manganese deposits of external generation. It is one of the mineral raw materials for manganese smelting.

4. Black manganese ore: also known as "trimanganese tetroxide", tetragonal crystal system, the crystals are tetragonal double cones, usually granular aggregates, with a hardness of 5.5 and a specific gravity of 4.84. It is also one of the mineral raw materials for manganese smelting.

5. Brown manganese ore: also known as "manganese trioxide", tetragonal crystal system, the crystals are biconical, and they are also produced in granular and massive aggregates.

6. Rhodochrosite: also known as "manganese carbonate", trigonal crystal system, the crystal is rhombohedral, usually granular, massive or nodular. Rhodochrosite is an important mineral raw material for manganese smelting.

7. Pyrite: also known as "manganese sulfide", the hardness is 3.5-4, the specific gravity is 3.9-4.1, and it is brittle. Pyrite occurs in large quantities in sedimentary metamorphic manganese deposits and is one of the mineral raw materials for manganese smelting.

Manganese ore is usually decomposed by acids. Commonly used acids are hydrochloric acid, nitric acid - hydrogen peroxide, hydrofluoric acid - sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid - nitric acid. Mineral samples that are not decomposed by acid can be melted and decomposed with alkaline flux and acidic flux. If the soft manganese ore is heated to 550 ~ 600 ° C, it decomposes and becomes β - limonite (Mn2O3). Most manganese ore contains a considerable amount of water, especially the dried manganese ore has a great water absorption. Manganese ore generally contains silica, phosphorus, lead, sulfur, aluminum, arsenic, barium, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium and other impurities, in the manganese ore layer is sometimes associated with copper, cobalt, nickel and other rare metals, of which silica, sulfur, phosphorus and arsenic are harmful impurities, especially the level of phosphorus content is very important, is an important indicator of the evaluation of manganese ore. Some of them contain calcium oxide and magnesium oxide as beneficial components in smelting.

Resource Distribution

Manganese is widely distributed in nature, and it is contained in almost all kinds of ores and silicate rocks. Manganese ore common is anhydrous and aqueous manganese oxide and manganese carbonate, now known manganese minerals have 150 species, but manganese content is high, can be enriched to form an economic value of manganese minerals but only 5-6 kinds, of which the economic value is soft manganese ore and hard manganese ore, in addition to water manganese ore, limonite, black manganese, rhodochrosite and so on. The content of manganese in these minerals can reach about 50 to 70%, which is an industrial mineral of manganese.

Application Field

Manganese ore is mainly used in the metal smelting industry. As an important additive element in steel products, manganese is closely related to steel production. There is a saying that "no manganese can not make steel", and more than 90%-95% of its manganese is used in the steel industry.

1. In the iron and steel industry, manganese is used to make manganese-containing special steel. Adding a small amount of manganese to the steel can increase the hardness, ductility, toughness, and wear resistance. Manganese steel is a necessary material for manufacturing machines, ships, vehicles, railroad tracks, bridges, and large factories.

2. In addition to the above-mentioned basic needs of the steel industry, the remaining 10% to 5% of manganese is used in other industrial fields, such as the chemical industry (manufacturing various manganese salts), light industry (used in batteries, matches, printing paint, Soap, etc.), building materials industry (colorants and fading agents for glass and ceramics), defense industry, electronics industry, environmental protection, agriculture and animal husbandry, etc.

In addition to the steel industry, it is also widely used in the following industries:

Metallurgical Industry

Manganese is an indispensable raw material for the steel industry. Manganese is a strong reducing agent, it can absorb all the oxygen from the molten steel, so that there is no iron oxide in the steel, becoming a non-porous steel ingot. Secondly, manganese is also a desulfurizer, it can remove all the sulfur in the molten steel, and adding a small amount of manganese to the steel can increase the mechanical properties of the steel, such as ductility, expandability, toughness and wear resistance. Manganese steel, ferromanganese, and various alloys made of manganese and copper, aluminum, nickel, cobalt, etc. and manganese compounds are of great use in industry.

Ferrous Metallurgy

Standard manganese iron can be smelted with manganese ore containing iron. Ferromanganese is an additional material for the production of special steels, and can also smelt a small amount of silicon manganese. Silicon manganese is useful for smelting certain varieties of steel

Nonferrous Metallurgical Industry

Alloys of manganese and copper can make corrosion-resistant metal reservoirs. Manganese bronze alloy can be used as ship equipment. Spessartine alloys have great uses in the aviation industry. Manganese nickel copper alloy can be made of standard resistance wire.

Chemical Industry

Manganese dioxide (soft manganese ore) can be used as a negative agent in the manufacture of dry batteries, and paint desiccant can be manufactured in the chemical industry. It is also possible to manufacture black decorative glass and decorative glazed colors with bricks and pottery. It can also be used as a variety of manganese compounds, such as manganese sulfate, manganese chloride, potassium permanganate and so on.
