Material Properties

Garnet was known in ancient China as Purple Crow Crow or Ziya Wu, a variety of colored gemstones with the same name as tourmaline, golden water bodhi, aquamarine and topaz. It is a group of minerals that were already used as gemstones and abrasives during the Bronze Age. Common garnets are predominantly red, but the variety of colors is so wide that they cover the entire spectrum. Garnet comes from the Latin word "granatus", probably from "Punica granatum", a plant with red seeds that is similar in shape, size, and color to some garnet crystals.

Material Type

Common garnets are identified as six species depending on their chemical composition, namely Pyrope, Almandine, Spessartite, Andradite, Grossular and chromium garnet. Garnet forms two solid solution series:1. Red garnet - iron aluminium garnet - spessartine garnet and 2. calcium chromium garnet - calcium aluminum garnet - calcium garnet.

Optical Properties

Different species of garnet come in many different colors, including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, pink, and transparent. Blue garnet, discovered in Bekily, Madagascar in the late 1990s. It is also found in parts of the United States, Russia and Turkey. Because of the high vanadium content (about 1 wt.% V2O3), its color will change from blue-green to purple in white hot light (incandescent). Some other species of garnet have the property of changing color. In daylight, their color categories are green, beige, brown, gray and blue; However, in white-hot light, they appear reddish, purple or pink. Because of their color-changing properties, this garnet is often mistaken for Chrysoberyl. The light wave transmission properties of various garnets range from transparent samples of gem quality to industrial opaque abrasives. The luster of minerals can be classified as glass and resin.

The chemical composition of different types of garnet varies greatly, and some species have stronger atomic chemical bonds than others. Therefore, the hardness exhibited by these mineral groups will vary from about 6.5 to 7.5 Mohs hardness. Among the harder species, such as ferroalum garnet, is often used for abrasive purposes.

Origin: Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, the United States, China and other countries. Gem-grade garnet minerals have been found in more than ten provinces and regions in China. Garnet filter material is also known as "jade sand" or "natural emery", with strong hardness and good acid and alkali resistance, is an island structure of aluminum (calcium) silicate, it is more beautiful color, selected by high purity magnetic gray, red, green, white and other chromosomes, is the current foreign newly developed three-dimensional wall spray paint, or the only glass shell factory can do color shell sandblasting wear material, because of its internal chemical molecules, good chemical stability and other characteristics. It is smelted by high temperature of resistance furnace with quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke) and wood chips as raw materials.
